How did you evolve and find your own business model?
I figured I would just go out and create “old agency 3.0” because it’s a model that worked so “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” Except what I realized was that it was broken. The way that we can work today has opened up a lot of opportunities for entrepreneurs like myself because you can eliminate overhead and subsequently hire better, more senior people. So you can spend less on real estate and more on top notch freelancers. My clients win because they get great service at a reasonable price. This is as a result of the level of talent I can provide them because we don’t have this heavy-duty structure. Nobody cares where I am or where I sit. They want to see me and they want to see the work. If you’re able to step back you can see what really matters.
Tell me about the power of networking in your own life.
It’s everything but I actually started building a network later than most. I ended up building myself a fantastic network of corporate people because I was thinking about working in corporate communications but then I realized that it had so many other brilliant applications. Network before you need to – you have to plant the seeds and you have to be authentic. As you get older and realize that you’re speaking for no-one other than yourself, it becomes really easy.
